Education Estates: Regeneration & Sustainability

By Natalie Sarabia-Johnston at Education Estates – October 2020 in Manchester

Come and see us at the Education Estates forum 13th and 14th October 2020

I’m excited to be speaking on the hot topic of sustainability in the education environment at the forthcoming Education Estates forum in October 2020. Hopefully we will be out of lockdown and the event will be a highlight for us to get together!

I’ll be discussing how two derelict, Grade II listed mill building complexes, have not only been developed to provided flexible teaching space, but have also been the catalyst for regeneration on two difficult development sites, in Nelson and Burnley.

By re-using existing buildings and re-purposing them, this leads to more than just the re-use of bricks and mortar, it helps kick start regeneration, delivering on jobs, community and economic sustainability.

The first site is Burnley Victoria Mill, now home of a new campus for UCLan, part of their planned 5-year growth for Burnley which provides a central and accessible location for new courses in the region.

The second site is the conversion of Brierfield Mills, in Brierfield. This overall site is three quarters of a million square feet of Grade II listed mills. Part of the site is given over to the headquarters for Lancashire Adult Learning College. A two-storey existing building with basement storage provides an academic suite and teaching space including a working flat for young adult learners to learn life skills.

The wider site has been converted into a community sports facility for Burnley Football Club, which has an indoor 3G pitch, sports courts, gym, climbing walls and children’s play area, business and office space. Private residential and an artist’s studio with new accommodation for visiting artists have also been designed in.

If you come along you will learn about:

  • The pitfalls and constraints of working with an existing building.
  • Sustainable benefits for using an existing site/building; space optimisation, utilisation, community and regeneration benefits.
  • Solving the problems of the need for more space, by utilising existing buildings.

Come along, I’d love to see you there!

You can register for Education Estates here. I hope you can make it! Come along and say hello to me.
