With HS2 on its way to Wigan for 2026, the regeneration of the local area is high on the agenda for the council, local residents, businesses and developers alike. Southgate & Sarabia are involved in a wonderful masterplanning scheme to regenerate the Wigan Pier area which will create a leisure and commercial destination for both local people and visitors.
An existing education centre at Pier 2 is to be repurposed into a brand new education facility for young people offering extra-curricular activities to expand access to opportunities. The Orwell public house on Pier 3 is being re-developed and a new venue is being regenerated for weddings and events with a beautiful canal side view. Pier 4 will become a gin distillery and microbrewery which will complement the central leisure attraction linking to Pier 5 which will be repurposed as a foodie market. By surrounding the market with various food offers, places to sit, eat and drink visitors will be also be able to enjoy performance, music and the arts.
The masterplan will also link Wigan’s two disparate train stations Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western with improvements within the public realm in terms of landscaping the canal side, making path ways clear with benching particularly for older members of the community. And finally, the scheme will incorporate an injection of urban art through commissioning art pieces and working with the local community and schools.
